Quilpie - Colour of Country and Home of Boulder Opal

Located 1010km west of Brisbane by road and 980km by rail, Quilpie was proclaimed a town on the 29th April 1917.  The township is situated on a mulga ridge on the western bank of the Bulloo River and is out of flood reach.

Quilpie is an  important commercial and service centre providing much of the supplies and infrastructure that facilitate the continuation of many of the outlying communities.  All smaller communities situated in the region of Quilpie are reliant on the town as a transport and mail distribution centre. These communities include the towns of Eromanga, Adavale and the smaller communities of Toompine and Cheepie.

The town of Quilpie is a neat modern compact town, which could be described as an "Oasis in the Desert".  The town itself has a population of about 670 with 1057 in the Shire. Its elevation is 198 metres.  The town and area is serviced by a ten bed Hospital with a full time doctor. There are currently three schools in the shire, Quilpie State School, St Finbarr's School run by the sisters of St Joseph also with boarding facilities and Eromanga State School. Some students also receive their schooling through Distance Education and School of the Air.

Quilpie only enjoys an annual average rainfall of approximately 300-500mm however there have been occurrences of heavy rainfall and historically a number of major flood events. The area has been in drought for a number of years although some relief rain has been welcomed.

The Quilpie Shire is steeped in history and Primary Industry plays a huge role in the Shire's economy with sheep, cattle, fish and an array of birdlife calling the Shire home. Quilpie's importance is as a railhead. It is the centre from which cattle from the Channel Country and beyond are railed and in good seasons upwards of 80,000 cattle pass through the railhead. Sheep also pass through in large numbers and opal is a very sought after commodity in the district. Road livestock haulage depots also service the Shire.

Quilpie is the home of the Boulder Opal and is a mecca for serious miners, enthusiasts and tourists alike. The boulder opal mined within the Quilpie Shire is of high quality and is sought after on all of the world opal markets.
